CHAIR REPORT

I suspect I was not the only one surprised by the fresh fall of snow in the middle of February, just as many of us were beginning to think of spring. While some travelled to warmer destinations over the Carnival break and others sought out even more snow elsewhere, Luxembourg decided to offer its own seasonal reminder. I hope you have all enjoyed the Carnival holidays with your families and are now looking forward to the brighter days ahead.

You will notice that we have added new content to the newsletter. We are delighted to introduce an HR column contributed by one of our new members, Genevieve Machin, an experienced Group Chief Human Resources Officer based in Luxembourg. We greatly appreciate her contribution covering employment and HR-related themes relevant to our community. Both Jo, our Editor, and Genevieve welcome your feedback on this column, as well as any suggestions for future topics you would like to see addressed.

This year, we have also introduced a new concept: central-area Ladies’ Lunches, designed

particularly for members who work in the city and would enjoy an informal midday gathering. These monthly lunches provide an opportunity to connect, exchange ideas, and

explore spontaneous themes proposed during the lunch itself. We look forward to seeing

these develop into relaxed and engaging touchpoints within our calendar.

I would like to remind everyone that there are still places available for our upcoming Quiz

Night on Saturday, March 28th, 2026. We still have places left, so please round up your

friends and join us for a lively evening of friendly competition, prizes, and excellent

company.

I am also delighted to officially confirm that we have opened registrations for our annual

Car Boot Sale, taking place on Sunday, April 19th, 2026, at the covered Parkhaus of the Belle Étoile shopping centre, on the ground floor in front of the GANG establishment. Please also see the notice regarding donations and drop-off items for the BLC stand, as the Club will

once again host its own stall.

As we do not have our usual parking team this year, we would very much welcome volunteers to assist us on the day. The layout will be straightforward, with stalls located on the ground floor and vehicle access for visitors directed via a separate entrance from the first

floor onwards. However, support with general coordination and helping to manage the BLC

stand would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to volunteer and experience the

event from behind the scenes, please contact the Events Team at events@blc.lu.

From a cultural perspective, we are also planning an outing for the spring edition of the

British & Irish Film Festival. Please save the date from March 18th to March 22nd. Further

details will follow via email and on our website.

For the entrepreneurs amongst us, this is also a reminder that our Women’s Start-Up Pitch

Event, taking place on Thursday, June 4th, 2026, continues to gain traction. We are pleased

with the level of applications received so far and look forward to your continued support—

whether as applicants, attendees, or members of the audience.

To ensure that we continue to curate events that reflect the interests of our membership, our

Newcomers and Membership Team is currently preparing a short survey. We would greatly

appreciate your cooperation in completing it once circulated, as your input will help us

better understand your preferences and shape future activities accordingly.

With Quiz Night, the Car Boot Sale, the Film Festival outing, and our Start-Up Pitch Event

ahead, the coming weeks promise to be active and engaging. Moreover, we are

partnering with other organisers, including the London School of Economics alumni network,

to ensure that we offer as varied a programme as possible for all of you.

We look forward to seeing many of you at our events.

CELEBRATING CYNTHIA’S 93rd BIRTHDAY

Last month, a few people gathered to celebrate the 93rd birthday of our honorary chair and club founder Cynthia Albrecht Lelliott MBE. Great fun was had by all and the hostess proved

that age is just a number by outlasting most of the revellers!

Happy Birthday Cynthia, the club wishes you health and happiness

INTERESTING PODCASTS

Dish

This is one of Kathy Liebl’s - BLC Secretary - favourite podcast and I am particularly

passionate about it too! Hosted by Angela Hartnett - a Michelin starred chef - and Nick

Grimshaw - Radio DJ. Each week they interview a guest who is usually promoting a new film

or television programme in the UK. The emphasis is all around food so prior to the interview,

the guest is asked to email in their food likes and dislikes. Discussing this over a meal

prepared by Angela, the banter is fantastic! The podcast is sponsored by Waitrose - a UK

supermarket - and all recipes cooked can be found on the DISH website. I’ve made a few

of them and they’re delicious!

Other highlights include asking each guest what the best way to eat eggs is; favourite

kitchen implement; favourite flavour of crisp etc.

Young Again

Kirsty Young - broadcaster and journalist - asks fascinating people what advice they would

give their younger self. Authors, artists, actors and film-makers are among those revisiting the

moments that made them.

HEALTH ARTICLE

How Your Environment Might Be Impacting Your Health – Part 1: Your Home

Healthy habits don’t rely on willpower alone. They grow from the environment you live in every day.

When we talk about environment, we mean, your home, your social world, and your digital space.

Each one quietly influences how you feel, what you do, and which choices come more easily.

Let’s start with the most immediate layer: your home.

Modern homes often contain more chemical exposure than we realise. Cleaning sprays, plastics,

furnishings, dust, and even air fresheners all add to what your body has to process. The good news?

Small changes can make a noticeable difference.

Here are a few simple ways to make your home feel lighter and healthier:

Small home swaps that matter:

Ventilate daily

Indoor air can be more polluted than outdoor air. Open windows for even a few minutes

each day to refresh the space.

Leave shoes at the door

Shoes bring in pesticides, dirt, and pollutants. Keeping them by the entrance reduces what

enters your living area.

Rethink cleaning products

Many standard cleaners release irritants into the air. Eco alternatives or simple options like

bicarbonate of soda can work just as well.

Watch fragrances

Synthetic air fresheners often contain undisclosed chemicals, listed as fragrance or

parfum. If you use scented products, look for products labelled 100% essential oils,

usually listed by botanical names like Lavandula angustifolia (lavender). Or try making your

own greener alternatives.

Be mindful if you have pets, as fragrances, even natural oils can affect cats and small

animals.

Reduce plastics in food storage

Microplastics are now being found in the body and are considered to be harmful.

Switching to glass or stainless steel for food prep and storage is a straightforward step.

Keep dust and damp under control

Dust carries unwanted particles. Regular wiping and vacuuming (ideally with a HEPA filter)

helps. If you notice damp or musty smells, a dehumidifier can reduce mould risk.

Choose your bedding with care, if you can

New mattresses and bedding often carry chemical residues. Organic cotton sheets or a

mattress topper can reduce skin exposure.

None of this needs to be perfect. One or two changes are enough to start.

This month’s small action:

Pick just one home change to try this week.

Was it opening windows more? Swapping a cleaner?

Leaving shoes at the door?

Next month, we’ll look at your social environment — the

people and spaces that shape your energy more than you

might realise.

BLC PAST EVENT

BLC West Area Dinners – January & February Round-Up

January and February saw two lovely BLC area dinners bringing members together across

the North West and South West.

In January, 12 of us from the North West met at Edelwyss in Kopstal for a lively and jolly

evening. Alongside catching up after the Christmas break (and even comparing notes with

photos from our last visit!), there were plenty of meaningful conversations too — from local

happenings to sharing challenges and supporting one another.

In February, 8 members from the North West and South West came together at

Beierhaascht in Bascharage. The atmosphere was calmer but just as warm, with many

discovering the restaurant for the first time. The round table proved a new favourite —

perfect for open conversation, shared advice, and some lovely unexpected personal

connections.

Two different evenings, two different vibes — but both full of connection, support, and

community

Valerie and I hosted a Central Dinner on 29th January at Tibet in Limpertsberg. It was a fun

evening with great food and great company. We welcomed both established and new

ANYONE FOR A PLATS DU JOUR?

Grandpa’s Greek Souvlaki

Not technically a Plats du Jour but I happened to come across this place whilst walking on

Sunday. Hidden away in a little corner of the passage between LUSH Cosmetics and Muse

BY, I found this fantastic Greek hidden gem!

You can build your own pita wrap or your own salad or if you just fancy a snack, grab a

souvlaki stick or a feta parcel.

Desserts look amazing but I didn’t have any this time and coffee is also on the menu.

The food is fresh and delicious. It’s a family run establishment and extremely good value for

money - the cheapest meal I think I’ve ever had in Luxembourg!

The restaurant isn’t huge and one thing I noticed was that the tables are too big and the

chairs too wide so sometimes you can be a little too close to the table next door!

That aside, it’s definitely worth a visit

They also do takeaway and are open every day of the week

RECIPE CORNER

Lazy Daisy Cake

A charming vintage sponge cake topped with a warm caramelised coconut glaze. Simple to

make in one pan. It is perfect for afternoon tea and stays deliciously moist for days. Recipe is

courtesy of the NY Times.

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for the pan

• 2 large eggs, at room temperature

• ¾cup/150 grams granulated sugar

• 1 cup/128 grams all-purpose flour

• 1 teaspoon baking powder

• ½ teaspoon fine sea or table salt

• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract or 1 teaspoon ground cardamom (optional)

• ½c up/118 milliliters whole milk

Topping:

• ½ cup/113 grams unsalted butter

• ¾ cup/165 grams packed dark or light brown sugar

• ¼c up/60 milliliters whole milk

• Pinch of fine sea or table salt

• 1 ¼cups/105 grams shredded coconut (either unsweetened or sweetened)

Method

1. Preheat oven to 180°C and grease and line a square baking tin.

2. With an electric mixer or Kitchenaid whisk eggs and sugar until pale and fluffy, then stir

in vanilla or cardamom (if using).

3. Combine flour, baking powder and salt; gently fold into the mixture.

4. In a small saucepan, heat milk and butter together until just melted, then stir into egg

mix until you have a smooth, runny batter.

5. Pour into tin and bake about 25–30 minutes until golden and springy.

6. While the cake is baking, prepare the topping: In a small saucepan (you can use the

same one you used for the milk, and you don’t have to wash it), melt the butter. Add

brown sugar, milk and salt, and stir until the mixture comes to a simmer. Turn off the

heat and stir in coconut.

7. When the cake is done, pour the coconut mixture evenly on top and place it under

the grill for a few minutes until the topping is bubbling lightly caramelized. Watch it

carefully so it doesn’t burn (a few singed coconut shreds are nice)..

Returning to Work in Luxembourg – What’s different here

Returning to work is always an adjustment – whether you’re returning after parental leave,

caregiving, health reasons, relocation, or a longer career break. This series has been developed to provide you with more information regarding key aspects of Luxembourg’s

labour market and to support you as you (re)enter the workforce.

In this issue, we’ll explore:

• An overview of the Luxembourg job market

• Work permit requirements

• Talent Desk Luxembourg

An Overview of Luxembourg’s Job Market

According to the “Work in Luxembourg” site, 74% of Luxembourg’s workforce are foreign

nationals or cross-border commuters. This creates a diverse and international job market

consisting of over 170 nationalities. However, it is also considered a tightly interconnected job

market where people can move frequently between companies and reputations travel –

quietly, but consistently. This makes effective networking very important.

While known primarily for its financial services industry, Luxembourg has a number of other key industries that include advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence and data analytics,

cleantech, healthtech, logistics, research, skilled trades and crafts, and space. It is also home

to a number of European institutions including the European Commission, the Court of Justice

of the European Union, the European Investment Bank, and the European Investment Fund,

to name a few.

Luxembourg’s official languages are Luxembourgish, French and German. While the primary

language in the workplace is typically French, it’s important to note that English is commonly

used in the financial sector, international companies and in the country’s research institutes.

A good knowledge of Luxembourgish is required in public administration as well as in the

education and health sectors.

Can I Work in Luxembourg: The legal requirements

If you are an EU citizen, you have unrestricted access to the Luxembourg labour market. You

don’t need a work permit. The same applies if you are a citizen of Iceland, Liechtenstein,

Norway, or Switzerland.

If you are a citizen of a country situated outside of the EU (also referred to as “a third country

national”), you will need a work permit. (Note: If you hold an EU Blue Card, you are able to

move to a different Member State for highly qualified employment after 12 months of legal

residence in the first Member State which issued the EU Blue Card.)

Talent Desk Luxembourg

The are many resources available to you here in Luxembourg – so many in fact that it can

seem overwhelming. To help streamline this, the Luxembourg authorities launched Talent

Desk Luxembourg in January 2026.

An initiative of the Ministry of Economy and the Chamber of Commerce, and developed in

close collaboration with all the partners of the Work in Luxembourg initiative it provides

comprehensive support and personalised guidance to international professionals and

companies throughout their relocation and recruitment journey in Luxembourg. You can

In our next issue we’ll take a look at creating your curriculum vitae for the Luxembourg job

market and how to best position any gaps you may have in your career history.
