CHAIR REPORT

As we move into the spring months, I would like to share a few updates on the many activities and initiatives currently underway within the Club.

I am happy to say that we have now added a new finance column.

Following the introduction of the HR feature last month, we felt it was important to continue expanding the range of topics covered. I have heard from many of you how useful you find the health and recipe articles, and we also wanted to address topics related to our professional lives, for those of us who work, and to financial awareness, which concerns every

one of us.

I am therefore very pleased that Jessica Cooke, one of our very own members, is contributing this new finance column.

You will also find a membership survey in this newsletter. We have given careful thought to the

questions included, because your feedback is essential for us. I would be very grateful if as many members as possible could take a few minutes to complete it. As a volunteer organisation, we want to ensure that both the newsletter content and the events we organise continue to delight all our members, both those who have been with the Club for many years, and those who have joined more recently. Your responses will help us ensure that our programme reflects the interests and needs of our community as much as possible.

In this context, we have also begun organising newcomers’ gatherings, which you will see mentioned in this newsletter. Luxembourg is a country where many people arrive without established networks,

and it is important to me that the Club continues to be a welcoming place for those who are newly settled here.

February saw our first cocktail evening of 2026. These informal evenings will now be organised more frequently by our Events Team, as they provide a relaxed opportunity to meet familiar faces, and to make new acquaintances. You never quite know what may come out of a cocktail evening, and that is very much part of the charm of these gatherings.

In March 2026, we held our first quiz evening of the year. I would like to thank everyone who helped organise and contribute to the event, as evenings like this require a great deal of preparation.

We are also working actively on the Women’s Startup Pitch Evening taking place in June. We have received many diverse, unique, and really interesting applications, which is extremely encouraging, and confirms that this initiative resonates with women in Luxembourg’s English speaking community.

Participants selected to pitch will be informed on Thursday, April 2nd, 2026, after which we will organise an information meeting with the mentors and partners involved in the initiative, in order to go through the evening in more detail, and to prepare the participants for the event.

The event itself will take place on Thursday, June 4th, 2026, at 6 p.m., at the Hall Victor Hugo in Limpertsberg. The evening will open with remarks from the British Ambassador, who will also chair the judging panel. We are fortunate to have a group of experienced mentors and a strong judging panel

supporting this initiative. The event will be moderated by Emilie Fitzgerald, our PR and Marketing Officer. Partners including the House of Entrepreneurship and Bank Raiffeisen are also expected to participate.

This initiative is intended to encourage and support women with entrepreneurial ideas, but it is also designed as an educational evening for our wider community. We hope to see many of our members there, and do come along with your families, colleagues, and friends, as the discussions and insights

shared during the evening can be valuable for anyone interested in entrepreneurship and innovation.

Alongside these new initiatives, we also continue preparing some of the Club’s traditional events. I very much hope to see many of you at our upcoming Car Boot Sale, which will take place on Sunday, April 19th, 2026.

This year the event will be held in the open parking structure in front of the G.A.N.G. establishment at

the Belle Étoile shopping centre. The space allows fresh air to circulate, while still offering protection from the elements, and the necessary facilities, including toilets and electricity, have already been arranged. We have also decided to keep the prices for sellers the same as last year. The Car Boot Sale remains one of our flagship community events, and I hope many of you will come along, whether to sell, browse, or simply enjoy the atmosphere.

Looking further ahead, we have already secured the venue for our Annual Gala Night, which will take place on Saturday, October 3rd, 2026, at the Parc Hotel Alvisse.

Our Christmas Lunch has also been booked, and will take place on Tuesday, December 1st, 2026. I am particularly pleased that this year’s venue offers lift access, which will make the event much more easily accessible for everyone.

We are currently planning a number of additional talks and events for the months ahead, covering different aspects of life in Luxembourg. Your feedback through the survey will be extremely valuable in helping us shape these activities, so that they meet your expectations as closely as possible.

Finally, I would like to thank all members of the Committee, and our volunteers, for the time and energy they dedicate to the Club. Their commitment allows us to continue developing initiatives, organising events, and strengthening our community.

I hope to see many of you at our events in the coming weeks, and I wish you all a very Happy Easter.

Best regards

Amy Grech

VOLUNTEER WITH US

About the BLC

The British Ladies' Club of Luxembourg A.S.B.L. (BLC) brings together an international

community of English-speaking women in Luxembourg through social, cultural, and

charitable activities.

The Club promotes social connection and networking, family-oriented events, and women-

focused initiatives, including entrepreneurship platforms such as the Startup Pitch Evening.

Net proceeds from BLC fundraising events are donated to charities voted solely by the

Club's members at the AGM.

Role Overview

The Advertising Manager leads the Club's advertising function — selling and managing paid

advertising placements for external partners within the BLC Newsletter, website, and related

communication channels.

This role forms part of the BLC Committee and operates within the Club's established

governance structure. The Advertising Manager works in coordination with the Committee

and Board when developing advertising opportunities and managing partner relationships.

Monthly reporting and attendance at the monthly Committee meetings are required.

Key Responsibilities

• Sell advertising placements within the BLC Newsletter, website, and other approved

communication platforms.

partners.

• Develop advertising packages and partnership opportunities in coordination with the

Committee.

• Track advertising agreements, renewals, and payments in coordination with the

Treasurer.

• Coordinate with the Editor, Webmaster, and PR & Marketing team to ensure advertising

content is delivered correctly and on time.

• Provide formal monthly reporting to the Committee and attend monthly Committee

meetings.

Requirements

• Based in Luxembourg; fluent in English (French is an advantage, but optional).

• Strong communication and organisational skills.

• Comfortable working with email, spreadsheets, and basic publishing tools.

• A collaborative team player who works constructively within the Committee structure

and maintains regular communication, including throughout any external representation

of the Club.

• Attendance at monthly Committee meetings and provision of monthly reporting

• Willing to become a member of the Club and complete a structured onboarding

process.

The first month of the role will focus on onboarding: understanding the Club's mission,

governance structure, internal processes, communication channels, and the principles used

to select advertising partners in alignment with the Club's values and direction.

What We Offer

On the job training and practical experience in advertising sales, marketing, and

partnership management.

The opportunity to actively contribute to the BLC's social and cultural programme, Kids'

Club and family-oriented activities, and women-focused initiatives — including community

networking and entrepreneurship platforms such as the Startup Pitch Evening.

HEALTH ARTICLE

How Your Environment Might Be Impacting Your Health Part 2: Your Social World

Last month we explored how small changes at home can support your health. This month,

we move to the next layer: your social environment.

This includes the people you spend time with, the conversations you have, and the

expectations you carry.

Your nervous system is constantly reading social cues. Supportive connections can calm

you. Draining ones can leave you exhausted without knowing why.

Here are a few gentle ways to improve this layer:

Simple social shifts:

Notice how you feel after interactions.

Some people energise you. Others leave you tense or flat. Awareness is the first step.

Consider who you want to spend your time with.

Protect your time

You don’t have to say yes to everything. Leaving space in your diary is a form of self-care.

Ask for practical help

Many women are excellent givers and reluctant receivers. Small asks build

connection and reduce overload.

Create predictable rituals

A weekly walk with a friend. Tea at the same time each afternoon. Routine builds

emotional safety.

Mind your noise levels

Constant background noise (TV, radio) keeps your body in alert mode. Quiet

moments matter.

Get daylight early- one of my favourites.

Natural morning light supports sleep rhythms and mood. Even five minutes outside

helps.

You don’t need a new social circle. You just need to work more intentionally with the one

you already have.

This month’s small action

Choose one social change, such as:

  • Leave one evening unscheduled

  • Spend time with someone who feels easy

  • Ask for one piece of practical help

  • Build a simple weekly ritual

  • Next time, we’ll explore the final layer: your digital environment and how screens quietly

  • shape stress, sleep, and focus.

MONEY MATTERS

Money Matters for Women

For many of us, arriving in Luxembourg marked the start of a new chapter in our lives.

We are quite a unique bunch of women – not to mention brave – deciding to leave our

homes and live in a foreign country. We’ve let go of what we know and are rebuilding parts

of our lives from scratch. We might not feel particularly unique for this in Luxembourg, but it is

an incredible decision.

Moving countries is challenging. We leave behind the familiar and need to navigate new

systems, new costs, and new habits.

That’s a whole lot of new things to deal with.

Or…

It’s an opportunity.

A chance to review a few things.

To sort out what we’ve let slip.

To intentionally reset.

No matter where we are in the world, understanding our money, building positive habits, and

staying financially aware helps women achieve independence and security. And this can be

particularly important when living abroad.

So, if you’ve been here for a month, or a decade, let’s take a moment to look at a few things

that will strengthen your financial situation.

A simple place to begin is something I call a “money date”. Pop half an hour in your

calendar, make a cup of tea, and choose one thing you want to check out:

Have a look at where your money actually goes

Cancel one forgotten expense

Start building a safety net

There are many ways to start, but these are great. Let me explain…

Women often fall into two groups: those who avoid looking at their banking apps, and those

who assume they already know where their money is going. But there is a third way: to

actually know how you spend your money and make mindful decisions about it.

As you do this, it is highly likely that you will find something you have forgotten about (it’s not

you – it’s everyone). That trial subscription that went from free to €63 a month without you

noticing, that unused bank account quietly charging £5 a month, the three streaming

services you’re paying for (hint: rotate them).

An emergency fund sounds dry, but it’s actually one of the most magical things you can do

for your finances. It’s your safety net, your security, your opportunity. Open a high interest

savings account and start by transferring €10 to it (or whatever you saved by cancelling that

forgotten expense). What’s important is starting. But also give it a cool name “The Peace-of-

Mind Pot”, “The Life Happens Fund”, or “The Just-In-Case Jar”.

Start with one money date, then invite yourself on another one. Before you know it, you’ve

started a gorgeous money habit, and a new money chapter.

Next time we’ll look at the cost of belonging to two worlds.

A lovely photo of the FreeWheelers visiting Olga at the Haaptmann's Schlass In

Manternach in February.

The ladies had a fantastic evening at Mamacita in Luxembourg! Around ten of us gathered for a relaxed night of margaritas, delicious tacos, and plenty of lively conversation. With Mexican music setting the mood, the atmosphere was warm, cheerful, and full of laughter.

Small group, great company, and a perfect mid-week treat. Already looking forward to the next get-together!

The British Ladies Club was delighted to be part of the first “Settling into Luxembourg”

Expo held at St George’s International School on Saturday 14 March.

The event brought together a wide range of organisations offering support and

services for newcomers, including banks, crèches, sporting and gardening clubs,

churches, relocation services, ACL and even local wineries.

It was a busy and enjoyable day meeting many new singles families and children who

have recently arrived in Luxembourg. We were very pleased to introduce them to the

BLC and share information about our activities, and we hope to welcome many

of them to future events.

Our first BLC Ladies' Lunch was a wonderful success. Thirteen of us gathered at Shinzo, representing a lively mix of nationalities and backgrounds. The atmosphere was warm and engaging, with plenty of conversation, laughter, and the pleasure of meeting both familiar and

new faces.

Most of us opted for the plat du jour, which proved to be an excellent choice — beautifully prepared, full of flavour, and a great showcase of what Shinzo does well.

As a first event, it set a lovely tone: good food, great company, and a sense of community that we’re excited to build on. Looking forward to many more gatherings ahead.

ANYONE FOR A PLATS DU JOUR?

Reggie’s Burrito!

I know this is a favourite with some of our members and my daughter is always raving about it so I thought I would try it out!

Situated near Gare, Reggie’s Burrito didn’t disappoint me. They feature different meats daily - hence the Plats du Jour - and offer tacos or burritos.

I went for the tacos loaded with beef, cheese, salsa and salad. I took three and this also

came with a side of rice and black beans. I was very full afterwards but it was super tasty and

I can’t wait to go again!

RECIPE CORNER

This Lotus Biscoff Cake recipe is a foolproof homemade bake that’s ideal for enjoying that irresistible carmely, rich flavour in a light and delicate sponge. The perfect treat! Recipe is courtesty of Sarah Rossi.

Prep Time: 30 minutes Cook Time: 30 Minutes

Serving: 10-12

Ingredients:

225 g Unsalted butter, At room temperature, plus extra for greasing

225 g Caster sugar

4 Eggs

225 g Self-raising flour

150 g Biscoff spread

To Decorate:

175 g Unsalted butter, at room temperature

300 g Icing sugar

150 g Biscoff spread

Speculoos biscuits (optional)

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 180℃ fan/200℃/Gas Mark 6. Grease the 7" cake tins with butter

and line the bases with baking paper.

2. Cream the butter and sugar until pale, light and fluffy with a handheld electric

whisk (if you have one) or a wooden spoon. Stir in the Biscoff spread, followed by

the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Don't worry if it starts to

look a bit curdled, it'll all come together.

3. Add the flour. If you've been using an electric whisk, do this with a wooden spoon.

4. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared tins and smooth out with the back

of a spoon. Make a bit of a dip in the middle of each sponge to account for rising,

to help keep them level.

5. Bake in the oven for about 25-35 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the cakes

comes out clean.

6. Remove from the oven and allow the cakes to cool in the tins for about 5 minutes,

then remove the tins and allow to cool completely on a wire rack.

To make the Biscoff Buttercream Icing:

1. Beat the butter in a bowl until pale, light and fluffy (using an electric hand whisk if

you have one). Don’t rush this step.

2. Gradually sift in the icing sugar and stir in the Biscoff spread. Beat in a little boiling

water (2-3 tsps) to soften and lighten the texture of the icing. It should be light and

fluffy.

3. When your cakes are completely cold, sandwich together with half of the butter-

cream (using a piping bag if you have one). Spread or pipe the remaining icing on

top before serving and decorate with some lotus (speculoos) biscuits.

Happy Baking…

Writing a CV in Luxembourg

(Re)entering the workforce can feel both exciting and daunting - especially if you haven’t

updated your CV for a while. The good news is not only are there great resources available

to support you in updating your actual CV, but the Luxembourg job market values

international experience, multilingual capability, adaptability, and resilience - qualities many

women (re)entering the workforce already possess.

So how to best get started?

1. Start with a Strong Professional Profile

Recruiters (or their digital counterparts) scan quickly. Begin with a brief 4–6 line summary

covering:

Core expertise

Years of experience

Types or organisations you’ve worked in (corporate, EU institutions, start-ups, NGOs,

financial services, etc.)

Languages spoken

For example:

“Multilingual project manager with 10+ years’ experience in financial services and EU-

regulated environments. Strong background in stakeholder coordination, compliance

processes, and cross-border operations.”

This gives recruiters an immediate snapshot of your profile and seniority.

2. Focus on Results, Not Just Responsibilities

Employers respond well to measurable outcomes. When describing responsibilities, start with a verb, include specifics and results. For example, instead of “Responsible for team

management,” write “Led a team of 8 across two jurisdictions, improving reporting accuracy

by 20% and meeting all CSSF compliance deadlines.”

Even if you’ve been out of the workforce, think about results in previous roles. Numbers,

improvements, efficiencies, growth - these matter.

3. Position Career Gaps with Confidence

Career gaps are common and in Luxembourg’s expat-heavy environment, relocation gaps

are well understood. The key is to avoid apologising or over-explaining. A gap only becomes

a concern if it is unexplained\

Option 1: Include it in Your Timeline

2019–2024 | Career Break (Family Relocation & Caregiving)

Underneath, briefly mention transferable skills such as managing a complex

international relocation, coordinating multilingual school transitions, or completing

professional development (if applicable)

Option 2: Highlight Continuous Development

If you took courses, certifications, volunteer work, advisory roles, or consulting projects,

include them. Even informal leadership — school boards, community organisations —

can demonstrate governance, budgeting, or stakeholder skills.

Option 3: Use a Skills-Based Format

If your break is longer, consider structuring your CV around competencies rather than

chronology, especially for mid-career professionals.

4. Tailor for Luxembourg

Luxembourg employers often expect:

Languages clearly listed (with proficiency level)

Nationality and work authorisation status

Professional certifications

Keep your CV concise - ideally 2 pages.

Final Thoughts

Your CV is not a biography. It is a strategic document. It tells employers where you add

value now — not just where you have been. Career breaks are chapters, not detours.

Position them with clarity and self-assurance.

In our next issue we’ll take a look at self confidence and managing imposter syndrome.
