12 April – KLIBBEREN
Can you hear the joyful rattling sound? Legend has it that the church bells fly off to Rome for four days to confess their sins. During this time, the bells are replaced by the sound of children playing rattles. From Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday, children take their duty seriously, in hope of receiving Easter eggs in return for their efforts!
13 April – Lundi de Paques
Easter Monday is traditionally synonymous with Eimaischen. While its etymological origins evoke the religious wal to Emmaus, the reason why it’s celebrated with Peckvillercher remains unclear. Potters from the village of Nospelt crafted small terracotta birds and would come to the capital to sell their wares. Apparently in the 19th century, the potters were ordered to move their market to Place du Marche-aux-Poissons, where it still takes place today. The famous market attracts crowds eager to discover the famous birds and their increasingly original designs year after year.
17 April – World Malbec Day
Wine festivals are village events usually held in spring through late summer, arranged at local wineries or outdoors. Wine festivals are complemented with live music and traditional food, along with local wine and beer. On a Proufdag (tasting day) in May and June, each winery opens its cellars and organizes tastings of its latest seasonal wines. Villages along the Moselle river are the usual locations, and to celebrate a harvest sometimes the town’s fountains flow with wine. Grevenmacher and the Riesling Open in September are most popular.
